Excursions and Family Involvement at Learn & Laugh Marrickville

How Excursions Support the Early Learning Framework (EYLF)

At Learn & Laugh Marrickville, excursions play an essential role in supporting the Early Learning Framework (EYLF). The Early Learning Framework (EYLF) provides a structured approach for creating enriching learning experiences for young children. Excursions including in-service experiences, are a key element of the EYLF, as they offer firsthand experiences that bring learning to life and enhance children’s development. When we go on group outings, we empower children to be active participants in their own learning journey, developing their potential and build strong relationships with their environment, educators and community.

Excursions at Learn & Laugh Marrickville: A Reggio Emilia Approach

Our Marrickville centre follows the Reggio Emilia philosophy; Teachers, parents, and children work together. This collaboration strengthens the power of the educational experiences in the classroom. The aim of our weekend excursions is to connect with families and communities to show that the child is part of a large and supportive network.

The Importance of Family Participation in Excursions

We believe that by actively involving families in excursions, early childhood educators can create enriching learning experiences for children and strengthen the bond between home and the learning environment.

Excursions offer valuable learning opportunities, boost confidence, and promote social and emotional growth. Family involvement can further enhance these benefits by creating a sense of continuity and reinforcing learning experiences.

Marrickville Excursion Highlights: Real Learning Inspired by Children’s Interests

To date we have been on three family weekend excursions in the year and a half that we have been open.

1. Visit to Sydney International Airport

Located under a flight path, children at our Marrickville childcare centre often observe planes overhead. This curiosity led to rich classroom discussions, model building, and eventually a visit to the airport.Marrickville childcare family day out building social and emotional skills.Children and parents visiting Sydney Airport on a Learn & Laugh Marrickville excursion

2. Excursion to Sydney Zoo

When a neighbour’s cat sparked conversations about animals, children’s interest evolved from domestic pets to farm animals to wildlife — naturally leading to a zoo visit.

3. Sydney Aquarium Adventure

Interest in fish and marine life transformed our cubby into a pretend aquarium — and soon after, a real one, as we explored the Sydney Aquarium together.
