Family Events at Alexandria Early Learning Centre

Why Family Events Matter in Early Childhood Education

At Learn and Laugh Alexandria, we believe that family events in childcare centres are more than just fun activities; they aim to provide children with a sense of belonging, reinforce positive family values and foster a healthy and inclusive environment for all. Here at Alexandria we endeavour to hold family events as often as possible throughout the year to allow our families the opportunity to spend time engaging with their child in a space that often becomes their home away from home while parents are at work.

3 reasons why family events are so important for the children in our care

1. Establishing a Connection between Home and the Centre

By hosting events such as holiday parties & cultural celebrations, families are afforded the opportunity to interact with their child’s educators in a more informal scenario. The typical times of day where most conversations happen – drop off and pick up – can often be rushed and don’t always allow for proper connections to be built. When families feel included in the centre’s activities, they are more likely to share valuable insights about their child’s behaviour, interests or needs. Similarly for the children, they begin to feel safe, secure and supported in both spaces when they can see that positive connection being built between their family and their learning environment.

2. Encourages Cultural Awareness, Inclusivity & Emotional Development

Family events can be linked to many things such as culture, faith and personal history. By celebrating a diverse range of family events within the service, we help to model inclusivity and respect for the children in our care. Children learn that differences are not only accepted but celebrated. Big emotions are also involved in the celebration of these events. In the build up children can experience a range of emotions including excitement, anxiety or pride. Having these celebrations at the centre allows children to process and express these feelings in a supportive space. It also helps with the development of their emotional literacy as they learn to recognise, acknowledge & respect others emotions.

3. Builds a Strong Sense of Identity & Belonging

In recognising and celebrating different events that are important to our families it allows the children in our care to feel seen and valued. Not only is this true of the bigger cultural events that we all share in but also in the smaller scenarios such as birthday celebrations or welcoming a new sibling. All these moments help to affirm a child’s identity, strengthen their emotional security and lays the groundwork for positive relationships with their peers and educators.

As you can see, celebrating all these important events is about more than just throwing a party or setting up fun activities. It allows us to provide meaningful opportunities for our children to strengthen their sense of self, to build strong partnerships between the home environment and the centre and teaches the children the importance of inclusivity in all its forms. We will continue to help support all of this through the wonderful and varied events that we host here at Alexandria.
