Our Approach to Healthy Eating Through Exploration and Connection

At Learn and Laugh, we believe that healthy eating habits begin in early childhood and are best nurtured through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Our approach goes beyond simply offering a range of nutritious meals, we aim to build children’s understanding, curiosity, and positive relationships with food.

A key part of our healthy eating philosophy is our “Food of the Month” program. Each month, we focus on a specific fruit or vegetable, giving children the opportunity to explore it in a variety of engaging and age-appropriate ways. This consistent focus allows children to become familiar with new foods, encouraging confidence and willingness to try something different.

Families involvement and contribution

We value the important role families play in shaping children’s food experiences, which is why we invite families to share their child’s favourite recipes that feature our monthly ingredient. These contributions help us create a strong connection between home and the centre, while celebrating the diversity of our community. Children feel a sense of pride when their family’s recipe is shared and explored with their peers. Some of the families’ recipes have then been added to our menu permanently.

Our curriculum is then thoughtfully planned based on both children’s interests and family input. This means that each “Food of the Month” evolves into a rich learning experience that extends far beyond the kitchen. Children engage in sensory exploration, using touch, smell, and taste to investigate the fruit or vegetable. They express their creativity through art experiences, including still life drawing and painting, and deepen their understanding of where food comes from by planting seeds or shrubs.

Hands on experience and connection with community

Through gardening experiences, children can observe the growth process over time — from seed to harvest. These moments foster patience, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for the food they eat. When it is time to harvest, we share the produce within our centre community, creating a meaningful connection between effort, growth, and nourishment. We love seeing what families have cooked at home using our own freshly harvested vegetables.

By embedding healthy eating into our everyday learning, we aim to support children in developing lifelong positive attitudes towards food. We see mealtimes and food exploration as opportunities for connection and learning.
